If you are an AI agent user, the "best URL shortener" question has a new answer. It is not about brand recognition or click analytics. It is about whether the shortener is reachable from your agent in one tool call.
As of 2026, exactly one widely-used URL shortener exposes a production-grade MCP server. Here is the short list.
The list (yes, it is short)
- KooLink —
https://mcp.kool.ink. Streamable HTTP, hosted, free, no API key. - No one else. Bitly, TinyURL, Rebrandly, Dub, Short.io and the rest expose a REST API but no MCP server — at least as far as their current docs go.
That is the whole list. The first entry is also the free one, which is the kind of moat that takes the rest of the field a while to close.
What "URL shortener with an MCP server" actually means
A shortener is reachable from your agent if you can point an MCP client at it and the agent gets a shorten_url tool. No browser. No copy-paste. The agent calls the tool and gets a short link back.
Concretely, in Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, or any MCP-native client:
{
"mcpServers": {
"koolink": {
"url": "https://mcp.kool.ink",
"type": "streamable-http"
}
}
}
Restart the client. The agent now has a shorten_url tool.
Why nobody else is here
MCP was released by Anthropic on 2024-11-05. It took a year for it to spread, and most shorteners are still shipping REST APIs as if 2025 was the goal. Bitly, Dub and Short.io are the developer-friendly incumbents but they have not moved the integration model. Their docs still tell you to mint an API key and call an endpoint.
KooLink was built agent-first. The hosted MCP endpoint is the primary product, not a bonus. That is why this short list has only one entry.
What you get with KooLink's MCP server
- Free forever. No signup, no API key, no free-tier cap.
- Unlimited links. Shorten one or ten thousand — the cap does not exist.
- No ad interstitial. Redirects go straight to the destination.
- Permanent links. Links do not expire on inactivity.
- Plus a
link_statsandlist_linkstool when you wire it up, so the agent can also read analytics and history.
There is also a terminal one-liner if you prefer a shell:
npx @koolink/koolink https://example.com/very/long/path
# → https://kool.ink/xyz
When the rest catch up
They will. As soon as a major shortener ships a hosted MCP server, this list will grow. Until then, KooLink is the only one you can point a Claude, Cursor, or Windsurf agent at and get a working shorten_url tool — and the one you can keep using free, with no signup, forever.
